Before starting on the production of my own website I gathered some screen shots of already existing sites to see which features I liked, and disliked.
From studying other peoples designs I discovered that my website doesn't have to be full with images to be successful as a portfolio, they just need to be placed well.
I also discovered that I tended to like the more compact, 'box like' designs rather than the full page layouts.
